James was born (1969) and raised in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Although his early forays in the Chicago graffiti scene proved to be influential upon several generations of spray can artists, he always took risks with his art and continues to evolve as a painter and installation artist. His work has been exhibited at several notable institutions such as the MCA, Northwestern University and the SAIC’s Roger Brown Gallery, and also continues to be accessible to the community through his work as a teaching artist with Urban Gateways, A.R.T. and Gallery 37. In 2010, he has solo shows scheduled for the Beverly Art Center and The Architrouve in  Chicago, along with his first ever international solo exhibition at the Singers Sweatshop in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

East Meets Midwest: New Visions of Figure Painting (Midwest Paint Group) - top
Sunday - May 09

Exhibit: April 14-May 9
Reception: Apr. 24, 7-9pm

As cutting edge art becomes more and more obscure, and its self-importance increasingly self-indulgent in these hard economic times, it’s worth noting that painting has always survived predictions of its demise. In point of fact, many artists across this country continue to explore the visual environment in ways that so inspired the great painters of the past.

This survey brings forward two groups of artists united by a visual sensibility and an enthusiasm for traditions of painting. This sensibility is one of engagement and fascination with the world around us: how we see it, experience it, feel it deeply through form and color. The pursuit through painting and drawing of the mysteries of the visual world is indeed an existential experience illuminated by historical precedents. To these two contemporary groups of artists, “tradition” is never a limit nor a restraint, but liberation–a constant source of renewal.  –John Goodrich
